ISE II Society and Living Standards Independent Listening

ISE II Society and Living Standards Listening

In this download, there is an independent listening task to help ISE II students prepare for the ISE II Independent Listening Task and the ISE II Society and Living Standards subject area. It provides lots of good vocabulary and language of the grade and is a good way to reinforce the lexis of society. The listening is about the pros and cons on immigration, so it’s a good springboard to further discussion.

How to use the ISE II Society and Living Standards Listening Resource

There are several ways you can use this resource. You could just use it as a listening exercise to help improve students listening skills. Ask students to listen once to find the gist of the listening. Then they listen and take notes about what they hear and report back the pros and cons of immigration to the USA that the speaker mentions.

Alternatively, you could get students to work in pairs and make notes while they listen. When they have listened twice, they work together to try and rebuild the text, as close to the original as possible. This is called a dictagloss activity and it helps students with their sentence formation and with reinforcing the language of the grade. You might want to do this with just one section of the listening after having done the first listening activity above.

You can also use the text as a springboard for discussion. After reporting the pros and cons of immigration, they could say which they agree and disagree with and offer their own opinions. They could also write an article about the subject.

We hope you like this listening text. The download below contains the listening in an mp3 file and a pdf with the audio script and the answer key. Click on the red button to download.
