GESE 8 Society and Living Standards Lesson: An integrated skills lesson

GESE 8 Society and Living Standards Lesson

In this PDF download, you can find an integrated skills lesson to use with your Trinity GESE 8 students. The subject area is Society and Living Standards and it deals with the topic of using celebrities to help raise awareness for charities.

How to use the GESE 8 Society and Living Standards lesson

The lesson begins with a brief discussion about charity. The students have to talk about if and how they support charities, which charities they support and why they choose a particular charity. In this section, the subject of celebrities supporting charities is also introduced.

In the next part of the lesson, the students have to complete an ISE style reading into writing task. There are 4 texts about charities using celebrities and the students have to complete 15 questions – 5 match text to statement questions, 5 find the true statement questions, and 5 summary notes completion questions. Don’t worry if your students aren’t doing an ISE exam – the texts are still good input for the students and they can be used as a springboard to discussion.

Following this, there is a reading into writing question – a discursive essay. The students are guided in their planning and in how to write planning notes, and then they use the notes to write the text. There is also a sample answer you can show to your students to help them write the text. This will all help the students to consolidate the language of the grade and their ideas for discussion should this topic come up in the conversation phase of the GESE 8 exam.
