GESE 5 Special Occasions Lesson – An Integrated Skills Lesson

GESE 5 Special Occasions Lesson

In this download, you can find an integrated skills lesson about the topic of SPECIAL OCCASIONS to help your GESE 5 students prepare for the special occasions conversation area. It involves reading, writing and speaking about different ‘coming of age’ ceremonies from around the world.

How to use the GESE 5 Special Occasions Lesson

The lesson starts with a discussion about what a ‘coming of age’ ceremony is and how this is celebrated in the students’ culture. The students have to look at pictures of coming of age ceremonies from around the world and talk about them with their partner and the class.

The next part of the class involves a reading text about coming of age ceremonies from around the world. The reading is an ISE I style reading activity – the students match titles to paragraphs, they find true statements and they have to complete sentences with a few words from the text. However, even if your students aren’t thinking about doing an ISE exam, the reading questions are still good practice as they ask the students to skim and scan the text and read for more detailed information – very useful second language reading skills to develop!

After completing the reading, there are some discussion questions for the students to talk about. This will help them to use some of the previous vocabulary and think about some typical questions which might come up in the conversation task of the GESE 5 exam.

Finally, there is a writing task where students have to write a letter to a friend about a coming of age party they have been to.
