In this download, you can find an integrated skills lesson about the topic of HOBBIES AND SPORTS to help your GESE 4 students prepare for the hobbies and sports conversation area. It involves reading, writing and speaking about different unusual sports from around the world.
How to use the GESE 4 Hobbies and Sports Lesson
The lesson starts with a discussion about students’ favourite sports. Then the students have to look at pictures of some unusual sports from around the world and talk about them with their partner and the class.
The next part of the class involves a reading text about some unusual sports. The reading is an ISE Foundation style long reading activity – the students match titles to paragraphs, they find true statements and they have to complete sentences with a few words from the text. However, even if your students aren’t thinking about doing an ISE exam, the reading questions are still good practice as they ask the students to skim and scan the text and read for more detailed information – very useful second language reading skills to develop!
After completing the reading, there are some discussion questions for the students to talk about. This will help them to use some of the previous vocabulary and think about some typical questions which might come up in the conversation task of the GESE 4 exam.
Finally, there is a writing task where students have to write a descriptive essay about an unusual sport. This is an ISE Foundation task 4 extended writing type task, but again, even if your students aren’t doing an ISE exam, it is good practice for the students and will help consolidate some of the language they have used in the lesson.
